Kaifi Azmi (14 January 1919 – 10 May
2002), translated from the Hindi-Urdu by Manfred Spencer Alverston &
Associates.
You who are
attempting to smile convincingly!
What sorrows
could there be that compel you to concealment?
Mositure within
the eyes and laughter upon the lips!
What is the
actual condition you are perilously hiding from exhibiting?
They will turn
poisonous, the tears you secretly imbibe!
Those wounds
that are continuing to heal with the passage of time!
Why do you keep
on needlessly irritating them by way of touch?
Fate is a linear
game of time!
Why do you
continue losing perpetually to that fate which is now your past?
You who are
attempting to smile convincingly!
What sorrows are
there which compel you to concealment?
