Sahir Ludhianvi (1921-1980), translated from the Hindi-Urdu by Alverston & Associates

Page 501 (Sahir) (holding and blessing a newborn)

You were not fashioned a Hindu or a Muslim

You are the descendant of mortal heavyweights

You will mature into a human being!

It is splendid you’ve remained unnamed, nonreligious

Unlike how such discernments have divvied and branched humanity

You cannot be incriminated for possessing such a grasp yet

But you will be recognizant to such persuasions as time advances

You are the descendant of mortal heavyweights

You will mature into a human being!

The Creator anointed all of humanity as human beings

Nevertheless, we fashioned Him a Hindu or a Muslim

Omnipotence entrusted us with just this earth

But we still chose to create India somewhere, Iran elsewhere!

You are the universal deluge who will break down embankments:

The religion that teaches hatred

The foot that tramples human beings

You do not belong inside these places of worship

Where only a specific scriptural decree is rendered acceptable

Yours will be the solicitude of peace

You are the descendant of mortal heavyweights

You shall be a soulful human being!
